Help the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays bag oyster shells for use in restoration projects!
After enjoying oysters or clams at a partnering Don’t Chuck Your Shucks restaurant, the spent shells (shucks) from diner’s plates and are separated from the waste stream and put into special bins. After “curing” in the sun for a minimum of six months, the shell is used in local habitat restoration projects such as Living Shorelines and Oyster Gardening. These recycled shells are the best material on which to start growing “spat” (juvenile oysters), and they can provide habitat for communities of grass shrimp and worms which then support populations of commercially-valuable crabs and fish in our Bays. Bagging these shells is a great way to give back to the Inland Bays, it’s fun and there’s no prior experience necessary!
