Bays to Backyards: Local Action, Lasting Impact

The Bays to Backyards Community Engagement Program is built on the idea that healthy, resilient environments start with active, empowered, and connected communities.

This first-of-its-kind program in Delaware empowers neighborhoods within the Inland Bays watershed to steward shared open spaces and strengthen resilience in a changing watershed—starting right in their own backyards.

Developed by the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays and local and state partners, Bays to Backyards helps communities tackle ongoing challenges facing our watershed—like habitat loss, poor water quality, stormwater management, and climate change—by providing practical, nature-friendly solutions for your neighborhood.

Through a points-based recognition system, neighborhoods can earn “Bay Friendly Community” status and enjoy meaningful rewards that celebrate their progress.

Beyond environmental benefits, Bays to Backyards strengthens neighborhood pride, connections among neighbors, and a shared sense of purpose.

Together, we’re turning local pride into real impact.

About the Program

Bays to Backyards is all about helping communities take action. Participating neighborhoods receive hands-on guidance and helpful resources to follow a simple five-step process that includes developing and implementing a 3–5 year Action Plan. This plan helps improve open spaces and teach residents about caring for the environment right outside their doorstep.

Neighborhoods can choose to focus on priorities such as:

  • Managing Stormwater and Flooding
  • Sustainable Landscaping
  • Creating and Enhancing Wildlife Habitat
  • Reducing Waste
  • Energy Efficiency and Climate Actions

Communities earn points toward Bay-Friendly Community recognition, awarded at multiple levels by the Center and local, state, and university partners.
