As the Director of Outreach and Education, Lisa Swanger oversees the Center’s array of education and outreach efforts. Her goal is to combine sound science with engaging, outcomes-based education and stakeholder engagement that builds meaningful connections resulting in enhanced environmental literacy and informed decision making to protect and restore the Inland Bays and their watershed. Her areas of expertise and interests include watershed education and outreach, stakeholder engagement, stormwater best management practices, marine resource management, marine debris, and environmental psychology.
Prior to working at the Center, Lisa gained extensive environmental education and program management experience with non-profit, private, and state organizations. Most recently, she worked in the Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies at Coastal Carolina University as the Coastal Waccamaw Watershed Educations Programs Coordinator. In this position, she was responsible for coordinating the Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium established to assist local governments located along South Carolina’s northern coast to meet federal stormwater permit requirements for public education and involvement.Lisa’s deep-rooted passion for the ocean and particular interest in the human dimensions surrounding coastal and marine conservation led her to obtain her Master of Science Degree in Marine Resource Management from the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. Her undergraduate degree is in Sociology and Biology from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.
